Remarkable sandwiches are so rare, so today when I was done with my turkey on rye, I snapped this photo to suggest that if you’re near Porter Avenue and you’re hungry, stop by the Custard Corner & Deli.

The amount of turkey meat was generous, and the bread, lettuce, and tomato were so fresh you could tell someone had just washed the vegetables.

Even the dill pickle was good.

You can’t get that across the street….

I have songs in my head for everything. I see a word, hear a phrase, something, anything, can trigger a song. One of my friends once said there is a soundtrack to my life.

The name brand of this tea is obviously meant to be a pun.

Want the song in your head? Listen to it at pandora.com.

When I was a kid, we always had a gallon jar of “sun tea” around, either brewing in the window or cooling in the fridge. We started out with a plain glass jar, the kind pickles used to come in, and we would fill it with water, a few tea bags (mostly we had the Red Rose brand, which is an orange pekoe type of tea leaf –where did all those figurines go?), and let the jar sit in a sunny window for the better part of a day. Once sun tea became more popular, there were gallon jars available at the store with spigots in the bottom to make it easier to pour a glass.

I don’t care for brewed iced tea (it’s too strong), and I don’t like sweetened iced tea (it’s too sweet). I recently tried honey-sweetened green tea, and it was okay (it’s not too sweet and not too strong), but the only reason I drank it was that I was very thirsty, and the other choices were soda, juice (everything in the convenience store was sweetened with corn syrup), and overpriced bottled water. (I like spring water, but when they charge $1.49 for a small bottle, that just bugs me.)

We never brew sun tea at my house anymore. I don’t really know why. Maybe I just like tap water so much I don’t need to spend the effort to make the tea. Also, I tend not to have a lot of caffeine these days, limiting myself to a couple cups of coffee in the A.M. and maybe a green tea later on in the day.

The skin is ultra brown because this banana has been refrigerated. The inside is just perfectly ripe, not quite overripe, but if I don’t eat it today, it will have turned. And don’t ever let a banana turn on you!

I’ve always liked the PayDay candy bar because it has the greatest amount of peanuts of any of the candies. And now they have a new version with a chocolate coating! Mmmmmmm.

(This may be the only time I ever blog about candy, just in case you’re wondering.)

This Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for you, my blog reader.

Anyway, I just bought a box of donut holes for a mid-day snack, and I’m finding myself eating them all (boy are they hard to dunk into my coffee mug though!), so every time someone I know walks past my office I yell “Carb-Tastic Donut Holes!” to see if I can get anyone else to share the carb/fat/calorie burden with me.

One person said no, that she had to leave room for tomorrow’s big feast. Well that’s just WRONG, because actually we need to stretch the stomachs today, to get them ready for tomorrow’s binge.

And on a related note, my sister accidentally mixed up too much pumpkin pie filling, so she’s bring two pies and wants to know if that’s a problem. Hello, have you MET me?

mmmmmmmm, Pie

  • back to commuting - back to being screamed at by ignorant motorists
For the past year, I didn't live far enough from work to bother bicycling (I was walking to work), but I recently started a new job, so yesterday was my first bicycle ride to work and back. It felt great! It was also nice that the snow had melted so that there was room for me on the side of the road. But on my way home, an ignorant motorist shouted out […]

  • I can't wait to try out Google's maps for BICYCLE routes!
I've been waiting for this for a long time. At one point, I started working on a program that would use Google's map tools to create bicycle routes, but the programming was a little over my head. Google Maps Finally Adds Bike Routes (click here for complete article on Wired.com) At long last, Google Maps has routes specifically for bikes. read more […]

  • New Orleans bike taxis could get City Council OK
I'm going to write a note to these people to ask for a copy of the draft legislation mentioned in the article. I hope the legislation passes, because it will help keep bike taxis (AKA pedicabs) on the street in other cities. Who knows, it could even encourage people to PUT bike taxis on their streets. New Orleans pedicabs could get City Council OK By Br […]

  • The Difference An Email Address Makes
If you’re using an email address for your business that you got from your internet service provider (ISP), or an email address from one of the many free email services, such as Hotmail or Yahoo!, then your potential customers may not be getting the best impression of your business. Wouldn’t it be better if they wrote for information to an email address like […]
  • First Impressions Count
The first impression your business makes on a web site is important. This probably comes as no surprise to you, because it sounds like common sense. But some Canadian researchers have quantified the theory in a study published in January 2006. Web sites judged in a blink TORONTO, Ontario (Reuters) — Internet users can give Web sites a thumbs up or thumbs dow […]
